Forgiving God
People sometimes have resentment or bitterness toward God. The hurts and injustices of life can cause us to believe God has failed us by allowing painful things to happen to us, by failing to answer certain prayers, or by not blessing us with things we think we need (and that some others receive).
God is perfect and cannot commit any sin of commission or omission, thus He does not need to be forgiven. However, we need to renounce any false expectations and thoughts we have about God, and release any anger we have toward Him.
Remember, while God is perfect this world is not. God is just, but we suffer injustices in this life. God is all-powerful and in ultimate control of the universe, but He has given people and angels free will, which can be used to perpetrate good or evil against us and others.
No matter what we’ve gone through, God is not to blame. But often in our hearts we have the “Why!?†question, and we can perceive that God has not done right by us. We cannot joyfully submit to God and worship Him freely if we are bitter toward Him. As we work through any bitterness or anger toward God, we can experience tremendous healing and restoration.
Bitterness toward God often had a starting point in a painful experience. If the person knows where it came from, you may need to minister and bring healing to that wound first.
If they don’t know why they are struggling with releasing their anger against God, it can be helpful to have the person pray, “Lord Jesus, what is at the root of my struggle to release my bitterness toward You? Why is this so difficult?†You can then lead them through the 4 R’s, Pouring Out Emotions, or other tools as needed.
Here is a sample prayer for releasing God from anger/bitterness.

“Lord, I know that You are perfect in all Your ways and that You haven’t done anything wrong. I repent for the anger and bitterness that I have had toward you for __________. I repent for blaming You and accusing You of doing wrong, and I ask You to forgive me and cleanse me of these sins. I rebuke the enemy from this area of my life and I receive Your forgiveness. Thank You that I can rest in the truth that You are good, You are for me, and You love me. Amen.â€
